Credit card payment

Aadhaar is an online service that allows people to access government services, both in India and abroad, via e-governance platforms like MyGov or NREGA portal (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act). The UIDAI has created a special identity card called the Aadhaar Card. For any services provided under Section 6 of the Act as well as for other reasons listed in the Rules established thereunder,

What is an Aadhaar Card?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued to Indian residents based on their biometric and demographic data. It is the world’s largest biometric ID system, with over 1.1 billion enrolled members as of March 2018.

The Aadhaar card has three parts:

  1. an electronic chip containing UIDAI’s database;
  2. information about your name, address, and other details; and
  3. and your photograph (which can be uploaded by anyone).

Importance of  Aadhaar Card

  • Proof of identity- It demonstrates your identity, demonstrating that your name and address match those on your identity documents.
  • Proof of address- It gives the government information about where individuals live, which can be used to verify the legitimacy of an individual’s residence or business activities.
  • Proof of citizenship status in India, through which Indians living abroad can prove themselves as Indian citizens. Especially when visiting India or submitting tax statements at airports and other places. It is where required by law for them to provide this information (such as when entering/exiting from India). This helps avoid any confusion over whether someone has been granted permission from their home country before traveling there. It also ensures proper documentation when they return home again after leaving.

Process of Obtaining an Aadhaar Card

You can get an Aadhaar card by filling up an online form or by visiting a nearby Aadhaar center. The process of obtaining an Aadhaar card is easy with the guide reading the steps and procedure in the manuscript.

  • Fill out the form that is available on the UIDAI website and submit it along with the required documents like your photograph, signature, and thumb impression.
  • The UIDAI will issue you a 12-digit unique identification number within 15 days of receiving all these documents from you.
  • If you are not able to get an Aadhaar card through the online or offline process, then you can still apply for one. All you need is a compliant document like your passport, voter identity card, and any identification card.

You must maintain your Aadhaar card safe and secure once you obtain it. Likewise, try to avoid giving out your Aadhaar number to anyone as doing so could get you into a variety of situations.

Aadhaar was for Resident Indians

Aadhaar was introduced in 2009 as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India. It’s a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). Aadhaar can be used to open bank accounts, apply for passports and mobile numbers, get an RTC (Real Time Computerized) food ration card or even register your marriage.

What can be the Implication/s without an Aadhaar Card?

You might be thinking that without an Aadhaar card, you can’t avail of government services. Well, not exactly. The fact is that there are some exceptions to this rule and they are as follows:

  • NRIs can avail of benefits under the Ration Card Scheme and Public Distribution System (PDS). The details of these benefits will be available only after the NRI has submitted his/her Aadhaar Number along with other required documents for verification purposes at their nearest Govt Office or Post Office.
  • If any person comes from abroad for employment purposes in India, he/she should apply for an NREGA work eligibility card.

NRIs Don’t Need an Aadhaar Card? Understand the Implications

If you are an Indian national and have been living abroad for more than six months, then it is important to know that you don’t need to apply for an Aadhaar card. Aadhaar cards are issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which was set up in 2009 as a not-for-profit company under Section 8(1)(d) of the Companies Act 1956. The UIDAI is responsible for issuing Aadhaar numbers and providing authentication services such as linking bank accounts with biometric details like fingerprints or iris scans among others.

There are some situations where NRIs can use their passport instead of applying for an Aadhaar card:

  • You can use your passport if you want to make payments through internet banking or mobile phone recharge services at foreign banks.
  • You can also use your passport when traveling abroad even though most countries do not accept e-passports as valid travel documents.

A Positive Development

If you’re an NRI, the fact that Aadhaar is not mandatory means there is no need to get one. Instead of applying for an Aadhaar card, you can use other methods such as a passport and driving license with your biometric data attached to it. It is important to understand that while these documents may not be valid in India, they will allow you to travel abroad without any issues at all.

The government of India has made Aadhaar Card mandatory for all Indians who are above the age of 18 years. The government is hoping that this initiative would be able to bring down corruption in the country and also identify more people who are eligible for various benefits. Many people don’t have an Aadhaar card and hence they cannot get any benefits under this scheme.
